Performed Play Readings – 2012 Season

Each year, The Actors’ Forum presents five fully staged play readings at Sorlies, Glen Street Theatre. These are weekend matinee presentations, performed by high profile professional actors working with seasoned directors. The plays, by Australian and overseas playwrights, include revivals of popular classics and contemporary plays, as well as exciting works which are rarely performed by commercial or subsidised companies. Now in its 17th year, the Forum is a non-profit group run and administered by volunteer actors and directors. This means prices can be kept to a minimum $20 full price and $15 concession.

The performances in 2012 are as follows:

Dial M for Murder
By Frederick Knott
Sat 10 March @ 1.30pm

Directed by Nicholas Papademetriou.
With: Joseph Del Re, Renatto Fabrotti, Laura McIntosh, Adele Querol, Peter Talmacs & Christopher Tomkinson.

The Actors Forum introduces its 2012 season with Frederick Knott’s Dial M for Murder which is guaranteed to have audiences on the edge of their seats.

Tony Wendice has married his wife Margot for her money; then arranges the perfect murder for the same reason. He blackmails a scoundrel into performing the deed, however the plot continues to thicken with more twists than a phone cord!
The 1954 screen adaptation, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, has since become an all time film classic.

Sanctuary
By David Williamson

Sat 19 May @ 1.30pm

Directed by Jacqueline Kott.

This is not just one of Williamson’s comedies, but a serious conflict between an idealistic young writer and a world famous and charismatic foreign correspondent. It exposes the fact that ‘non-political reportage’ is often biased by the beliefs of the writer. Rich with humour, it is a rare attempt to illuminate propaganda. As with all David Williamson’s plays, it is highly topical and eminently enjoyable.

Fallen Angels
By Noel Coward

Sat 14 July @ 1.30pm

Directed by Judi Farr.

We enter Noel Coward’s world of elegance, good manners and emotional understatement; where we can relax and laugh at the gentle humour. When a former lover of the two ‘Angels’ appears whilst their husbands are away, they have grave concerns that their past secrets will be revealed. A truly delightful comedy from of the most stylish writers of the Twentieth Century.

Gulls
By Robert Hewitt

Sat 11 August @ 1.30pm

A confronting theme is made lyrical by the use of bird puppets. The seagulls are a metaphor for the dreams of the entrapped Bill, who has been brain damaged by a teen accident. He is cared for by his sister and it is their relationship which is the central thread of the play. This award winning Australian play affirms without sentimentality, the power of loyalty and love.

On Golden Road
By Ernest Thompson
Saturday 13 October 2012 at 1.30pm

An autumnal play of ageing and loving. Set in the summer house of an erudite couple, the eightieth birthday of the husband propels the couple into an attempt to build bridges with their daughter, who has grown distant. Nostalgia is the mood but there are great moments of joy, intelligent humour and love. The play became an Academy award winning film in 1981.
