Learn how to grow fresh food in a small space when Indira Naidoo comes to Glen Street to speak first hand about her book ‘The Edible Balcony’.

Indira’s family and friends thought she’d ‘lost the plot’ when she began growing herbs, fruit and vegetables on her tiny 13th floor apartment balcony. Motivated by a desire to cook and eat her own garden produce, Indira spent a year growing more than 40 edibles including tomatoes, zucchinis, eggplants, potatoes, beetroot, lettuce, carrots, mushrooms strawberries and lemons. Hungry bugs and limited space posed no barriers as Indira created and nurtured a balcony garden.

‘The Edible Balcony’ documents her inspiring experiment. Beautifully photographed this practical guide shows how anyone – with just ten spare minutes a day – can set up a balcony garden of their own. With down to earth advice Indira guides readers through the fundamentals of growing fresh food in a small space; from choosing the correct pots, soil and plants for your space, to dealing with bugs without the use of harmful pesticides.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Indira Naidoo has been a regular fixture on Australian television screens for the past twenty years as a journalist and news anchor for ABC TV and SBS TV, and as a guest on such shows as Good News Week, The Circle and Celebrity MasterChef. In 2009 she was trained as a Climate Change Presenter by former US Vice President Al Gore. Indira is passionate about living her urban life in a more sustainable way and documents her food philosophy on her blog saucyonion.blogspot.com

They said he’d never make it. They were wrong.

In January 2012 Pat Farmer accomplished one of the greatest human feats in history. He arrived at the South Pole after the longest and arguably most dangerous run in history, a physical and mental conquest against terrible odds that puts him in the company of history’s great adventurers.

Pat Farmer’s 21,000 kilometre Pole to Pole run, dedicated to raising funds for the Red Cross, began in the North Pole in April 2011 and took him through Canada, the United
States, Central America and South America to his final destination in the Antarctic. He ran an incredible average of 65 kilometres every day, some days running up to 100
kilometres or more, equivalent to almost two and a half marathons in a day.

The epic trek saw Pat brave blizzards, nearly lose his life when he became lost in the blazing deserts of Peru, evade polar bears, snakes, crocodiles, armed bandits and rogue militia, and narrowly miss being wiped out by an out-of-control truck. He defied unimaginable pain, suffered dehydration and stress injuries and destroyed his feet.
Unbelievably, in the most daunting section of the run he set a new running record for the South Pole, averaging over 50 kilometres a day while being blasted by a ferocious
blizzard and -40 degree temperatures.

Pole to Pole is Pat Farmer’s diary of his achievement, chronicling the highs and lows of the life of an extreme athlete. Revealing how and why he kept going through some of the most inhospitable places on earth, Pat was determined to raise money for a cause he passionately believed in and to get home to this two children, Brooke and Dillon.

PRAISE FOR PAT FARMER
“Pat Farmer’s Pole to Pole run is surely one of history’s great endurance feats and what makes Pat’s efforts all the more commendable is that, because of the funds he has raised, life is going to get better for thousands of people in impoverished and devastated communities all over the world.” Karl Stefanovic

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Pat is a multiple world record holder for endurance running. He has run around Australia and across North America twice. Pat served eight years as a Member of Australia’s Parliament, with three years as Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Science and Training. Named Achiever of the Year at the Australian of the Year Awards in 2000, Pat has raised millions of dollars for causes during his twenty-year running career including Lifeline, Cancer Council and Diabetes Australia. Pat is a widower and single father of two teenage children, Brooke and Dillon.

Shifting Sand is a new work richly inspired by the beach and the ocean. From the delicate play of light on the surface of the sea to the raging fury of winter storms, TaikOz’s thunderous taiko drumming and dynamic movement seeks to capture the beauty, majesty and force of the ocean.

‘Taiko’ is the Japanese word for ‘drum’ and TaikOz is Australia’s leading taiko drumming group. A TaikOz performance is more than just the beating of drums: it incorporates a complete world of drumming, song and dance that harks back to ancient Buddhist and Shinto rituals. It is a reflection of contemporary musical life, irrespective of nationality. A TaikOz performance is not only for the ears and the eyes, but is felt throughout the entire body. It is a truly visceral experience.
