Glen Street Theatre is preparing to raise the curtain on an exciting new chapter, with a major auditorium renewal project scheduled between January and April 2027.

This significant investment will see the complete replacement of auditorium seating and house lighting, enhancing comfort, accessibility and the overall audience experience while ensuring the Theatre continues to serve the Northern Beaches community for generations to come.

As Glen Street Theatre prepares for its next chapter, we extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported the Theatre over the years. Your contribution has helped connect our community through the performing arts and remains an important part of Glen Street Theatre's history, success and future.

For supporters of our 2006 Seat Dedication Program, this project also marks the next stage in recognising the important role your generosity has played in the Theatre's history.

Auditorium Renewal Project

What improvements are being made?

The auditorium renewal project includes:

  • Replacement of all auditorium seating
  • New house lighting throughout the auditorium
  • Improved accessibility features
  • Increased audience capacity
  • Enhanced audience comfort and viewing experience

Together, these upgrades will create a more welcoming, contemporary venue while supporting outstanding productions and memorable audience experiences for years to come.

Why are the seats being replaced?

The current seats have served audiences for twenty(20) years  and have reached the end of their operational life.

The new seating will provide greater comfort, improved accessibility and increased flexibility for future audiences.

What other improvements has Glen Street Theatre recently completed?

The auditorium renewal is part of a broader program of investment across the venue.
Recent upgrades include:

  • Installation of state-of-the-art LED stage lighting in 2025
  • Comprehensive sound system upgrade in 2026

These improvements ensure Glen Street Theatre remains one of Sydney's leading performing arts venues.

When will the Theatre be closed?

The Theatre will close from January to April 2027 while the works are completed.

The project has been scheduled during the venue's traditionally quieter period to minimise disruption to audiences, hirers and the annual program.

When will the Theatre reopen?

We anticipate reopening in early May 2027, unveiling a renewed auditorium and welcoming audiences back for an exciting new season of live entertainment.

Seat Dedication Program

It is hard to believe that nearly 20 years have passed since the last Seat Dedication Program was launched. The generosity of our supporters helped create the foundations for the vibrant cultural venue we enjoy today. As part of the auditorium renewal project, all existing seats will be replaced and the commemorative plaques attached to them as part of Glen Street Theatre's 2006 Seat Dedication Program will need to be removed. It

What will happen to my plaque?

Your plaque will be carefully removed before the seating replacement works begin and returned to you as a personal keepsake.

For almost 20 years, these plaques have served as a visible reminder of the generosity and community spirit that helped make Glen Street Theatre the special place it is today. While the plaques will not be reinstated on the new seats, your contribution remains an important part of our story and legacy.

How will my contribution be recognised in the future?

We are currently developing a new Honour Board that will permanently acknowledge the individuals, families and organisations whose generosity has helped support and sustain Glen Street Theatre over the years. Former Seat Dedication participants will be recognised as an important part of the Theatre's history and ongoing future.

When will I receive my plaque?

Plaques are expected to be returned during early 2027 as the seating replacement works are undertaken.
